Rolex Date — $4,347 – $9,936

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date occupies a deliberately understated position in the Oyster family — smaller and simpler than the Datejust, without the Cyclops lens, in a 34mm case that reads as unisex today. Available from steel through two-tone Rolesor to solid yellow gold, it is the quiet, wearable end of the perpetual-calendar lineup, prized by collectors for its restraint and vintage proportions.

Buying a Rolex Date

Two case sizes define the line: 34mm for the mainstream Date references and 26mm for ladies' variants such as ref. 6917. References in the 1500-series (1503, 15053) predate the quickset date mechanism; the 15000-series onward (15203, 15505) introduced quickset in 1977 — a meaningful usability upgrade. Metal drives price sharply: steel examples sit at the low end, two-tone Rolesor (15053, 15203) commands a premium, and solid yellow gold (15505) approaches the range ceiling. Prioritize original, unpolished cases, undamaged dials, and matching-serial bracelet. Sigma-dial and tropical-dial examples attract specialist premiums.

Generations & references

Early 1500/1501 references (1960s–70s) feature non-quickset movements. The 15000 series (1977) brought quickset date and refined cases. The line was quietly discontinued circa 2001–2003 as Rolex consolidated around the Datejust.

Pricing

At $4,347–$9,936, steel references offer genuine Oyster Perpetual entry pricing; solid gold examples sit near the ceiling, still well below equivalent Datejust gold market values. Current live range: $4,347 – $9,936. Prices shown are wire; card adds 3.5%.
