Buying a pre-owned Rolex Submariner

Pick the generation first

Used Submariners fall into a few clear eras.

Check the bezel and the dial together

The bezel should turn only counterclockwise, with a firm click, and the pip should line up at 12.

Look at the lugs and the clasp

A Submariner that has been polished often shows soft edges on the lugs and slightly rounded corners.

Decide on metal and color

Steel is the classic choice.

Which one is for you

If you want the classic everyday diver

Look at a steel Submariner Date in the 116610 or 126610 family.

If you want some color

The green-bezel 116610LV and 126610LV, and the blue-bezel 126613LB and 126619LB, are the ones to ask about.

If you prefer gold or two-tone

The 16613 and 16803 are steel and gold, and the 116613LN adds a black ceramic bezel.

Questions

What should I pay attention to on a used Submariner?

Check that the bezel turns only counterclockwise with a firm click, that the dial and hands age together, and that the case edges still look crisp. Also check the bracelet for stretch and the clasp for a clean close. If a part has been replaced, you should be told.

Which Submariner generation should I buy?

It depends on the look you want. The 16610 family is the older aluminum-bezel style, the 116610 family brought ceramic, and the 126610 is the 41mm version. If you can, try more than one on the wrist.

Can I walk in and buy a Submariner?

Yes, by appointment, Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm Pacific, in the downtown Los Angeles jewelry district. Call (213) 373-4424 or email sales@mywatchdealer.com so we can have the Submariners you want ready.

What comes with a used Submariner from you?

A 2-year store warranty covering the movement, a MyLuxApp-certified written appraisal and a presentation box. The warranty is ours, not Rolex's, and we are an independent dealer.

Do I need the box and papers?

A full set is nice to have, but it is not the only thing that counts. A well-kept Submariner with a clear service history can be a better choice than a full set on a tired one. Ask what is included and what has been replaced.

Can I return it?

Unworn in-stock pieces can be returned: you have 7 days from delivery to start a return. Special orders are final sale unless the watch is defective or not as described.
