Buying a pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
Start with the dial
The checked tapisserie pattern should be crisp and even from edge to edge, never shallow or smudged.
Read the case finishing
Brushed and polished surfaces alternate across the case and bezel, with fine bevels between them.
Look carefully at the bracelet
Check for stretch (a bracelet that rattles or sags), links that look different from their neighbors and any missing links.
Read the reference and the set
A full reference shows model, case material and dial and strap codes, so compare it with the papers and the caseback.
Which one is for you
If you want the classic everyday Royal Oak...
Look at the three-hand selfwinding models in steel.
If you want more going on...
Look at the chronograph Royal Oaks, in steel, gold or ceramic combinations.
If you want something smaller...
Look at the mid-size and small Royal Oaks.
Questions
What Royal Oak models do you have?
We list steel and gold Royal Oaks, including three-hand and chronograph models, and the selection changes. Check the current listings or call the desk on (213) 373-4424.
What is the difference between a Royal Oak and an Offshore?
The Royal Oak, launched in 1972, is slimmer and more refined, with an octagonal bezel and an integrated bracelet. The Offshore, from 1993, is larger and thicker with a sportier feel. If you want the original shape, choose the Royal Oak.
What should I check on a bracelet-integrated watch?
The tapisserie dial, the bracelet, and the case finishing. Look for a crisp dial pattern, bracelet stretch or missing links, and rounded case edges from polishing. Ask for close photos.
Why do references get discontinued, and why does it matter?
Audemars Piguet retires a reference when it updates the Royal Oak with new proportions, movements or dials. A retired reference cannot be ordered new, so pre-owned or a sourced piece is the route. Check the exact reference you are being shown.
Can you find a specific Royal Oak reference?
That is what the special order service is for. Send the reference and your budget, and the desk replies with a quote. Nothing is paid before price and availability are confirmed. After payment, expect 7-10 business days. Special orders are final sale unless defective or not as described.
Can I trade a Rolex toward a Royal Oak?
Yes. Trade credit applies to any watch we sell. Send us the Rolex through the sell page, take the firm offer, and apply the full agreed value toward the Royal Oak. You can also take cash.
Can I return it?
Unworn in-stock pieces can be returned: you have 7 days from delivery to start a return. Shipping is free, insured and overnight on orders of $1,000 and over, with a signature required.
