A Budget, a Wrist, and the Explorer II Question

Polar or black, 42mm or 40, new or used: the shortlist and the call for a do-everything Rolex.

A Budget, a Wrist, and the Explorer II Question

A buyer walks in with roughly the price of a new Explorer II and one problem: he wants a do-everything sport Rolex he will not baby, and he keeps bouncing between the orange-handed 226570 and whatever else that money touches. The occasion is daily wear with the odd dress-up, and he travels enough to want the 24-hour hand.

The shortlist writes itself. A new or recent 226570 in white Polar or black dial at 42mm; the outgoing 216570 at 42mm for a bit less; and, if he flexes down in size and complication, a plain Explorer or a Submariner. The Explorer II earns its spot because the fixed 24-hour bezel and second time zone do something the others do not.

Trade-offs come down to size and dial. The 42mm case wears large and flat, so a sub-6.5-inch wrist should look at the older 40mm 16570 instead. Polar dials show every scratch on the white but stay legible; black hides wear and reads as a stealthier tool watch. The orange hand is the signature and the thing he will either love or tire of, so handle both dials before deciding.

Here is the call: the used 216570 in black is the value pick, with the 16570 as the vintage-leaning alternative if 40mm suits the wrist better. Check the 24-hour hand tracks correctly, the bezel engraving is crisp, the lume plots match across dial and hands, and the bracelet code fits the reference. A serviced movement with a receipt is worth paying up for, since an Explorer II service is not cheap and a dry, unserviced example can hide a bill.

What I would do: buy a clean 216570 with a full set, wear it on the bracelet, and put the saved money toward a service so it runs for the next decade without a second thought.
