A Serviced Movement Beats A Famous Dial

The logo gets you in the door; a clean service record is what keeps a 36mm watch running true on a smaller wrist for the next ten years.

A Serviced Movement Beats A Famous Dial

The name on the dial sells the watch once. The movement sells it every day after that.

We see this most with smaller watches. A lot of buyers with 6.25 to 6.75-inch wrists come in looking for something in the 36 to 38mm range, and the pieces that wear best at that size are often older. A 36mm dress watch sits flat, the lugs don't hang off the wrist bone, and a slim case slides under a cuff instead of fighting it. Beautiful proportions. But a watch that size has usually been around a while, which means the thing that actually matters is whether anyone has opened it recently.

Gaskets dry out. Oils gum up. A movement that hasn't been serviced in fifteen years can keep ticking and still be quietly grinding itself down. The crown on a smaller case is tighter to grip, so people cross-thread it, and water finds its way in. None of that shows up in the brand name. It shows up on the bench.

So when a watch comes through our door, it gets authenticated in-house and gone over by our watchmakers before it goes in the case. We'd rather tell you a piece is two years from its next service than let you find out the hard way.

A well-kept 36mm on a tapered strap or a slim bracelet will wear easy from a Tuesday desk to a Saturday dinner. Dress it up, dress it down, it doesn't care. What it needs is to have been looked after. Buy the service history. The dial is just the part you read.
