There's a reason. A 40mm case sits flat on a 6.5 to 7.5 inch wrist, tucks under a cuff, and reads right across a room without shouting. The 44s and 45s that flooded the market a decade back looked bold on a display pad and clumsy in real life. Buyers worked that out. Now the resale market prices the difference.
What collectors pay up for is proportion that ages well. A clean 40mm diver with an unpolished case, sharp lugs, and honest lume holds a tighter spread between what we buy it at and what it sells for. That spread is the whole game. Tight spread means liquidity — we turn the piece in weeks, not seasons, so we can pay more going in.
Condition drives the number harder than people expect. Over-polished lugs knock real money off, because at this size the shape is most of what you're buying. A faded but original bezel insert can add to it. Box and papers help, though on a pre-owned piece we authenticate in-house, they matter less than the metal itself.
Why now: the oversized run is cooling on the resale side. The 44mm-and-proud watches are the ones sitting, discounted, slow to clear. The 40mm and even 38mm divers keep their footing because the demand base is wide. They fit more wrists, so more buyers bid.
