In the pre-owned market, condition isn't cosmetic — it's the number. Here's how polishing, case geometry, and paperwork move a price.
Two of the same reference can sell a thousand dollars apart, and neither seller is lying. The difference is condition, read honestly.
Start with the case. A watch that's been polished a few times over twenty years loses its edges. The lugs go from crisp facets to soft, rounded stubs, and the flat brushed surfaces start to bow. Collectors pay up for sharp lugs because you can't put metal back. A polish hides scratches today and costs geometry forever, so an unpolished or lightly-worn case with its original lines is the scarcer thing — and scarce is what moves price.
Service history is the other lever. A stack of receipts tells a buyer the movement was cared for and that nobody went in with the wrong parts. Gaps in that record don't kill a sale, but they widen the spread between ask and offer. A dial or hands that were swapped during a past service — even a factory one — can quietly knock value off a piece that looks perfect on the wrist.
Here's where the market gets sensitive. On common references, condition is the whole game; liquidity is high, so buyers can afford to hold out for a clean one. On scarcer pieces, a buyer will forgive more, because the next example might be a year away. Know which situation you're in before you judge a price as high or low.
