The Two-Tone Root Beer 16713: What Buyers Pay Up For

A sober read on where this steel-and-gold Root Beer GMT sits in the secondary market, and what actually moves its number.

The Two-Tone Root Beer 16713: What Buyers Pay Up For

This is a 1990 Rolex GMT-Master II, reference 16713, in steel and yellow gold with the brown dial and brown/gold non-ceramic bezel collectors call "Root Beer." It runs 40mm on a Jubilee bracelet. Pre-owned, authenticated and serviced in-house, backed by our store warranty.

In the secondary market, two-tone GMTs trade on condition more than anything else. The non-ceramic bezel insert is the tell: originals fade and age in ways reproductions don't, and a clean, correct insert is what separates a strong example from an ordinary one. Case sharpness matters too, since these got worn.

What collectors pay up for here is honesty of the piece. A 16713 that hasn't been over-polished, with the gold still crisp and the brown tones consistent across dial and bezel, sits at the top of the range. The steel-and-gold configuration keeps it more liquid than full-gold references, with a broader pool of buyers.

Why look now: the discontinued non-ceramic Root Beer is a finite thing. Clean, serviced examples don't sit long. This one is ready to wear.
