Seven Thousand Dollars and One Steel Rolex

A first-Rolex buyer, the Oyster Perpetual shortlist, and the call.

Picture a buyer with about seven thousand dollars, a first real Rolex in mind, and a specific problem: he wants steel and everyday, but he is tired of seeing the same Submariner on every wrist in the room. He asked what else does the job.

The shortlist writes itself around the Oyster Perpetual. It is the base Rolex: Oystersteel, an automatic movement, a screw-down Oyster case good to 100 meters, and nothing on the dial but the time. The current 41mm is the 124300 with the 3230 caliber; the 36mm 126000 and the 34mm 124200 cover smaller wrists. Against it sit the Air-King and a used Datejust 36, both close in money.

The trade-offs come down to dial and size. A plain black or silver OP is the quiet, safe pick and the easiest to resell. The 2020 lacquer dials in turquoise, coral, green, and yellow turned the model into a collector item, and the turquoise 41mm in particular trades well above the plain versions and above its own retail. That is upside and risk in one: you pay a premium now, and fashion sets the exit. The 41mm wears broad; the 36mm is the classic proportion and the safer bet across occasions.

Here is the call for this buyer. At seven thousand, a plain-dial 41mm 124300 in strong condition is inside reach on the secondary market and clears the office-to-weekend brief without shouting. The colored dials are fun but push the budget and lean on a trend. Buy the black or silver, wear it hard, and keep the box and card.

What I would actually do: take the 36mm if the wrist allows it. It outlasts every size trend, sits under a cuff, and it is the one Oyster Perpetual nobody talks themselves out of in five years.
