Two watches under one name, and the size that splits the difference.
<p>The Ballon Bleu de Cartier splits cleanly into two buys: the 33mm quartz and the 42mm automatic. Same rounded case, same blue sapphire cabochon crown tucked under a protective arc, but they are aimed at different wrists and different wallets.</p><p>Where they diverge is size and heart. The 33mm runs a quartz movement, sits light and flat, and reads as jewelry first and watch second. The 42mm carries a mechanical caliber, has real heft, and pushes the domed crystal and floating Roman numerals to full effect. Between them sit the 36mm and 40mm, which hedge the difference and, for many buyers, split it best.</p><p>Who each is for: the 33mm suits a smaller wrist and a buyer who wants the Cartier signature without a big presence, often in steel or with a diamond bezel. The 42mm is for someone who wants an automatic with wrist presence and does not mind the case wearing broad, because the ballon shape puts mass at the flanks. The mid sizes serve the person who wants one Cartier that crosses occasions.</p><p>Honest tie-breaker: movement and resale. Quartz keeps the entry price down and needs a battery every few years; the automatic costs more up front and holds interest better on the secondary market. On condition, check the crown cabochon for chips, confirm the crown guard has no cracks, and look at the case sides where Cartier's polish shows wear fast.</p><p>Pick the 36mm automatic if you can find it: it gives you the mechanical movement, a size that works on most wrists, and the cleanest resale of the range. The caveat is that steel Ballon Bleu values move with fashion more than with rarity, so buy one you will wear rather than one you expect to flip.</p>
