The oversized dive watch had its run. On a real wrist, a 40mm case sits flatter, wears longer, and stops fighting your cuff.
Put a 44mm dive watch on a 6.5-inch wrist and you can watch it happen. The lugs hang past the edge. The case tips as you move. By noon you've stopped noticing it and started working around it, pushing your sleeve back, turning your arm so the crown doesn't dig in. A watch you have to manage is a watch you eventually leave in the drawer.
A 40mm case, give or take, was the size the dive watch settled into for a reason. The lug-to-lug measurement usually lands somewhere in the high 40s to low 50s of millimeters, which is what actually decides fit. That span sits inside most wrists instead of bridging them. The case follows the curve of your arm rather than sitting on top of it like a coaster.
Proportion is the quiet part. On a smaller wrist, 40mm reads as substantial without reading as costume. The bezel still has presence. The dial still has room to breathe. You get the tool-watch look without the tool-watch bulk, and it slides under a shirt cuff instead of catching on it. That's the difference between a watch you wear to dinner and one you only wear on weekends.
Strap choice buys you range. A steel bracelet dresses it up and adds a little heft if you want it. A single-pass nylon strap knocks it down for summer and pulls the case tight to the wrist, which reads even smaller and more comfortable in heat. Rubber splits the difference. One 40mm case, three moods, none of them a compromise.
