Service History Moves the Price More Than the Name

On the secondary market, a documented service beats a famous dial — buyers pay up for a watch they won't have to fix.

Walk the pre-owned market long enough and you learn what actually sets one price against another. It isn't always the brand. Two pieces from the same maker, same reference, same year, can sit thousands apart. The gap is usually service history.

Here's why. A watch is a machine. Gaskets dry out, oils break down, mainsprings tire. A movement that hasn't been opened in fifteen years is a question mark, and buyers price in the answer. Nobody wants to close a deal and then hand the watch straight to a watchmaker for a full overhaul. That cost — and the wait — comes off what they'll pay.

Condition sensitivity is real here. A clean case with a recent service reads as a watch that was cared for. A tired movement with no paperwork reads as deferred maintenance, no matter whose name is on the dial. Collectors who know the difference pay up for the first and walk from the second.

That's the part people miss when they chase names. The name gets you liquidity. The service record gets you the top of the range. Both matter, but only one tells you whether the thing on your wrist will run.

Everything we sell is authenticated in-house and serviced by our watchmakers before it goes out, and it's backed by our store warranty. When a piece has recent work behind it, we'll tell you, because that's the number that holds. Buy the maintenance, not just the logo. The watch you don't have to fix is the one worth paying for.
