Every few months a reference gets hot. Forums light up, waitlists balloon, and the pre-owned price runs ahead of anything sensible. Then it cools. We've watched that arc play out enough times to stop treating it as a signal.
Here's what actually holds in the secondary market: condition, completeness, and a reference people still want when the noise dies down. A clean case with sharp edges, an unpolished or lightly serviced movement, box and papers present — those things move a price far more reliably than whatever was trending in spring. Sharp collectors pay up for originality. Original dial, correct hands, matching bracelet, no swapped parts. That's the premium that survives a cooling market.
Liquidity matters too, and it's not the same as hype. A reference you can sell in a week at a fair number is worth more to you than one that spiked and now sits. Steel sports models with deep buyer pools stay liquid. Odd dial variants and limited runs can command a lot on the way up and almost nothing when you need out. Know which one you're holding before you buy.
So what moves the price when the cycle isn't doing the work? Condition sensitivity is real — a service-due movement or a worn bezel can knock a meaningful chunk off. Provenance and paperwork settle nerves for the next buyer. And plain scarcity of the good examples, not the total production, is what keeps a well-kept piece firm.
Why now: buying into a peak means paying for someone else's optimism. Buying a genuinely good example on a quiet reference means paying for the watch.
