Hype tells you what to want; your wrist tells you what actually wears — and the two rarely agree.
The hype cycle sells you a name and a queue. It never sells you the one number that decides whether you'll actually wear the thing: lug-to-lug. A 40mm case sounds safe on paper. But if the lugs run 49mm and your wrist measures 6.5 inches or under, the ends hang past the flat of your wrist and the watch perches instead of sitting. Everyone online is chasing the model. Nobody's chasing the fit.
Here's what we tell buyers who come in with a 6 to 6.75-inch wrist. Look at case thickness before diameter. A slim 38-39mm dress piece under 10mm tucks under a cuff and reads elegant; a chunky 40mm diver stacked to 14mm rides high and taps the desk all day. Look at where the lugs curve. Downturned lugs on a smaller case wrap the wrist and disappear. Straight, wide lugs fight it.
Strap choice does real work too. A tapered leather or a supple rubber closes the gap that a stiff, thick bracelet leaves gaping on a narrow wrist. If you love a bracelet, get it sized right and micro-adjusted — half a link changes how the whole watch sits. Dress it down with a nato in summer when your wrist swells; dress it up on the bracelet or a fine calf strap for the office.
The piece that's "hot" this quarter may wear like a hockey puck on you. The one nobody's posting about might sit like it was made for your arm.
