A well-kept 36mm you actually wear outlasts a neglected flagship — and it sits better on a smaller wrist, too.
People walk in asking which brand holds up. Wrong question. The watch that holds up is the one that got serviced on schedule, and the one you'll baby is usually the one that fits.
Here's the connection most buyers miss. A watch that wears well gets worn. A watch that gets worn stays running, stays lubricated, stays honest about its own condition. The 41mm trophy piece that overhangs a 6.5-inch wrist ends up in a drawer, and movements hate drawers. Oils congeal. Gaskets dry out. You pull it out for a wedding three years later and it's gaining four minutes a day.
So when someone with a smaller wrist asks me about a big-name diver, I steer the conversation to proportion first. A 36 to 38mm case with a lug-to-lug under 47mm sits inside the wrist instead of spilling over the bone. The bracelet tapers, the crown doesn't dig, and the thing disappears under a cuff. That's a watch you reach for on a Tuesday. Slim it further on a NATO or a supple leather and it dresses down without looking borrowed.
Now the maintenance part. Most mechanical movements want a full service every four to six years regardless of the logo. A modest three-hander that's been opened, cleaned, and regulated on time will keep better time than a neglected icon.
