Styling the Yacht-Master II: A 44mm Regatta on the Wrist

Where a 44mm regatta chronograph fits a wrist and a wardrobe, and where it does not.

Picture a tanned wrist under a rolled linen sleeve, no jacket, boat shoes below. The Yacht-Master II sits in that slot where a diver feels too utilitarian and a dress watch feels too slight. At 44mm with the blue Cerachrom bezel on the Oystersteel 116680, it fills a large wrist and photographs bold without tipping into costume.

Pairings that work run white, navy, and sand. A white polo or oxford lets the blue ring and red regatta hand carry the color. Everose Rolesor (116681) warms against tan and olive, so it earns a place with knitwear and brown leather in cooler months. The full-gold 116688 wants an open collar, not an office.

Sizing and proportion decide this purchase. The case is 44mm and thick, with a tall Ring Command bezel that adds visual height. Under about a 6.75-inch wrist the lugs can overhang; check that the bracelet's first links clear the wrist bone before you commit. The countdown display and busy dial need room, so a smaller wrist reads cluttered rather than sporty.

When not to wear it: black tie, tight cuffs, and any setting where a quiet watch is the point. The regatta function and scale announce themselves, which is wrong for a room that prizes restraint.

Buying notes for the look you want: the steel 116680 is the versatile default and the easiest to resell; the Rolesor and gold versions cost more and narrow your wardrobe. Confirm the bezel ceramic is unchipped, the flip-lock clasp is tight, and the blue has not faded on early examples.

Rule of thumb: buy the Yacht-Master II for a strong wrist and a casual, sun-facing wardrobe — steel first unless gold already lives in your rotation.
