The one measurement that explains AP's integrated icon, and which reference to want.
<p>Eight point one millimeters. That is the case thickness of the Royal Oak "Jumbo," and it is the number that explains the whole watch. A 39mm steel sports watch that slides under a cuff has no business being this thin, and that tension is what Gerald Genta drew in 1972.</p><p>The specifics: the case is a 39mm octagon with a bezel held by eight hexagonal screws that thread from the back, so the heads you see stay perfectly aligned. The dial carries the Tapisserie guilloché — a grid of tiny raised squares — usually in Petite Tapisserie on the Jumbo. Inside the long-running 15202 sat the ultra-thin caliber 2121, retired in 2022; the current 16202 runs the in-house 7121 with a longer reserve and a redesigned rotor you can read through the sapphire back.</p><p>On the wrist it reads flat and wide rather than tall. The integrated bracelet tapers hard and does most of the comfort work, sitting the head low so the whole thing tucks under a shirt cuff. For most buyers the Jumbo is a two-strap watch at most, because the bracelet is half the design and few aftermarket options ever match it. The 41mm models, the 15500ST and the earlier 15400ST, wear larger and thicker at around 10.4mm, with more presence and a stronger 4302 movement, but they lose the party trick.</p><p>Which one to buy: if you want the watch Genta meant, chase a 15202ST before its 2022 sendoff or step into the current 16202ST and accept the retail chase. If you want a Royal Oak to actually wear hard and see the movement, the 15500ST at 41mm is the sane buy and trades below the Jumbo. Condition carries weight here, since the brushed-and-polished case shows every bad refinish, so inspect the bevels and screw heads before you commit. Either way, buy a full set with the box, the guarantee card, and the spare links, because a naked Royal Oak costs more to make whole than it saves.</p>
